Marinex Bags Sunny Point Dredging Contract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, recently awarded a $6.05 million contract to Marinex Construction, Inc. for the maintenance dredging of Military Ocean Terminal in Sunny Point, Brunswick County, North Carolina.

According to the Corps, the work will consist of removal and disposal of shoaled material that has accumulated in the basins and channels since they were last dredged.

The plan calls for dredging to be performed by mechanical dredge (clamshell, dragline or dipper). Dredging depths are 34 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth and 38 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth. The dredged material will be disposed at the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS).

USACE also announced that there is no environmental window for the dredging of the basins and channels by mechanical dredge or transport to and disposal in the ODMDS.

The project also includes maintenance dredging of the security boat basin that will be performed by a hydraulic cutter suction dredge. Dredging depth is 12 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth with disposal of dredged material in the upland diked Disposal Area 1.

The dredging window for the security boat basin is 1 October to 31 March. The total quantity of material to be dredged, including allowable overdepth, is estimated to be 1,000,000 cubic yards.
