All Set for San Luis Rey River Sediment Removal

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, recently awarded a contract to Steelhead Constructors, Inc., to remove 210,000 cubic yards of sediment from the San Luis Rey River as part of the federal flood control project along the river.

The $5.346 million contract calls for work to begin on September 15 and to be completed by mid-March 2018.

Steelhead will transport beach-quality material to Oceanside’s beach south of the pier at Seagaze Drive where construction equipment will contour the material for maximum benefit.

The contractor will haul material that is not suitable for beach placement to the El Corazon compost facility for further processing, USACE said.

The maintenance road atop the river’s southern levee, frequently used as a biking and exercise trail, will be closed to the public from Douglas Drive to Foussat Road from September 18 until project completion.

This action is necessary as a safety precaution because of the types and number of heavy equipment vehicles that will use the maintenance road to transport the dredged material, said USACE.

The city of Oceanside has established a detour route which follows Pala Road to Los Arbolitos Boulevard to Fireside Street through the Oceanside swap meet and reconnects with the trail at Foussat Road.

Sediment removal will occur Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and beach placement will occur Monday through Friday, USACE said.
