Shipping Minister Inaugurates Capital Dredging Work

Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday inaugurated the capital dredging work that will take place along ‘Daudkandi-Homna-Ramkrishnapur’ river routes.

According to the minister, the government will soon set up a modern river port at Daudkandi.

He also said that the country’s rivers have been losing their navigability due to negligence of the previous governments, “but the Awami League-led government is trying to restore the navigability of rivers”.

Shajahan continued by saying that the present government bought 14 dredgers between 2009 and 2013 and added the process of buying 20 more dredgers by 2019 is going on.

Besides, another 50 dredgers have already been procured under private sector,” Shahjahan Khan said, adding that the government has already procured three excavators. “The process of buying six more excavators for dredging is underway.

He concluded that the dredging work is going on, and that 1,380-km of waterways have already been dredged.
