Team Van Oord Receives the Green Apple Award

A delegation representing the Cannington Flood Defense Scheme attended the House of Commons on 6 November to accept the Green Apple Environment Award, which was bestowed on the project earlier this year.

The Green Apple Environment Awards scheme is an annual international campaign which recognizes, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world. The Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation and have since become one of the world’s most recognized environmental awards schemes.

The Cannington Flood Defense Scheme was recognized in the Awards ‘Building and Construction’ section, and was named Gold Winner in the ‘Water Management’ category. The project, completed earlier this year, was carried out by Team Van Oord on behalf of the Environment Agency.

The £4.5 million scheme involved the creation of a new 2km flood alleviation channel after the old brook, built in 1984, was deemed unfit to cope with present and future flood flows.

The new channel, which allows for four times the capacity, takes a new route for the first kilometer before entering culverts under the A39 and then following the former channel which rejoins Cannington Brook beyond the village.
