The special purpose vessel Currituck begins the day at Rudee’s Inlet in southeastern Virginia.

The project provides access to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean for commercial fishing vessels, charter fishing boats, head boats and a wide range of private recreational vessels.

The dredging is being done as a result of significant shoaling across the entire entrance channel.

The Currituck , working temporarily for the Norfolk District, is able to navigate and dredge in shallow waters to help create safe passage for mariners.

In addition to removing dredged material from the channel, the vessel can transport the material to the downdrift beach and deposit it in the surf zone to nourish sand-starved beaches.
