Roberts Bank Coastal Geomorphology Study Continues

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is continuing field studies in February 2018 as part of ongoing environmental and technical work for the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project.

The Project is a proposed new three‐berth container terminal that would provide 2.4 million TEUs of additional container capacity annually.

The Scheme is undergoing a federal environmental assessment by an independent review panel, under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, and requires other permits and authorizations before it can proceed.

According to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the field studies taking place in January include Coastal Geomorphology – one of the key components of the Environmental Assessment – and Abiotic Parameters Study.

The study will assess geomorphic effects using historical data, site observations, and detailed field measurements. In addition, numerical modeling of tidal currents, waves, salinity, and sediment transport are also included in order to assess the physical response of Roberts Bank to the proposed development.

Subject to regulatory approvals and permits, market conditions and a final investment decision, construction of the Project could begin in mid-2018 and would take approximately five-and-a-half years to complete.
