Visakhapatnam Beach Nourishment Work Finally Starts

Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) launched the Visakhapatnam beach nourishment scheme yesterday, after overcoming some technical issues.

The sand nourishment project was set to begin last week, but the work could not start as per schedule due to technical snag. The problem with regard to pipeline connectivity was the cause of the delay, informs The Hindu.

To complete this work, DCI deployed their trailing suction hopper dredger DCI XX to this area on January 27.

The coastal protection project will include placement of a significant amount of new sand onto the eroded beaches in Visakhapatnam.

On the recommendation of Deltares, a Netherlands-based independent institute specializing in research in water and sub-surface, VPT has been undertaking beach nourishment by collecting and dumping sand by laying a pipeline.

Deltares experts suggested that, instead of rainbow method of beach nourishment, collecting sea sand and dumping it at eroded beaches was most effective.
