Transnet National Ports Authority’s trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Ilembe, built by Royal IHC, recently took part in a trial for a special beach nourishment program along sections of the Golden Mile in Durban, South Africa.

Under this major coastal protection scheme, the TNPA’s 5,500m³ dredger was used to collect sand from the ‘sand trap’ area and then discharge the materials directly on to the beach via floating undersea pipeline.

Royal IHC said in their latest announcement that this successful project, which has paved the way for further operations in the area, was overseen by an expert from the Dutch company.

The emergency sand replenishment project, approved by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, was a joint operation between the city and TNPA.
