Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet members recently visited Runswick Bay on the North Yorkshire coast to view the latter stages of the construction project to enhance the village’s sea defenses.

The coastal protection works, valued at around £1.5 million, started in March and will be completed later this month.

The scheme, which has been designed to provide 100 years of coast protection for 96 properties, will reduce wave overtopping and help to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The project has been led by Scarborough Borough Council and funded by DEFRA GiA (via the Environment Agency) and the Runswick Bay Sea Defense Trust.

During their visit, the councilors met with representatives of the Runswick Bay Sea Defense Trust. Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of the Council, took the opportunity to thank them for being forward thinking and for their significant financial contribution to the cost of the project. Cllr Bastiman commented that this was a most welcome aspect of the scheme and wished that beneficiaries of other similar projects would follow their example.

Contractor, ESH Construction, was complimented for working around the challenges presented by the tides and busy tourism activity.
