Work Starts on Machynys Sea Defenses

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) recently started maintenance work on sea defenses along the Machynys Peninsula in Llanelli that will provide protection for over 1700 homes and businesses from flooding.

The work is being carried out along a 4.5km stretch of the defenses.

It will strengthen the existing defenses, that protect 1746 properties, making sure they keep working effectively for another 20 years.

These sea defenses stretch from the Loughor estuary, along the Millennium Coastal Path to the Machynys golf course.

“Flooding can devastate communities and this work is essential to maintaining the level of flood protection along this stretch of the Llanelli coast,” said Mandy Richards, Assets and System Management officer for NRW. “This is a long project but one that will reinforce the flood protection of a huge amount of homes and businesses.”

According to NRW, the work will take around 7 months and the Millennium Coastal Path will remain fully open for people during that time.
