Rehabilitation work on Pierce Island is necessary to prepare the levees to receive dredge material to be removed from the bottom of the marina,” the city stated.

The scope of work for the Pierce Island Rehabilitation Project includes the installation of Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM) exclusion fencing, vegetation removal, SMHM herding and levee construction at the east pond, as well as repairing and modifying existing weirs and discharge pipes on the island.

On September 20, the excavation works within the East Pond are set to begin.

Excavated material will be used to build the new levee surrounding the East Pond to prepare Pierce Island for the upcoming dredging spoils material. This work is scheduled for completion on November 9, 2018.

Preparation for the 2019 Dredging Project will begin in January during which time the required bird survey will take place. The bird survey is performed during a four-month period and determines the dredging project timeline.

The current biological regulation for the 2019 Dredge Project are:

  • If no birds are detected, the city can dredge from August 1 through November 30, 2019:
  • If birds are detected, the city can dredge from October 1 through November 30, 2019.
