Work on the project – which is being carried out by the company as part of Team Van Oord and on behalf of the EA – started in October 2016, and when complete will significantly reduce the flood risk to more than 2,300 properties in Shoreham and East Lancing.

W1: Shoreham Fort

The flood defense in this reach is nearly complete. Work is about to begin on the Fort car park and is expected to be complete in summer.

W2: Emerald Quay and Sussex Wharf

Work to Emerald Quay slipway is complete and the slipway is open. The flood glass at Emerald Quay has been installed. The Environment Agency expects works to be finished at this reach shortly.

W3: Riverside Road

Piling work is very advanced with the concrete works well underway. The Environment Agency has started work on the tie-in to the footbridge. The flood glass is mostly installed, and they have begun reinstatement works on the gardens. This reach should be complete by late summer.

W4: Ferry Bridge

The new steel sheet-pile wall with brick cladding and flint insets has been completed. The tie-in to W5 Riverbank will be commencing shortly. During this work, part of the footpath at Lower Beach Road will be closed. The flood gate adjacent to the Waterside Inn will be installed later in the summer.

W5: Riverbank

Construction started this year and the piling works are almost finished. The riverbank footpath is now closed to the public, and will remain closed for the duration of the work. The concrete capping is currently being installed around the sheet pile wall.

The Environment Agency used a different technique in this reach called a Giken piling rig, suited for work in tight spaces. Known as the ‘Giken train’, it uses hydraulics to push the piles into the ground.

W6: Recreation Ground

The flood defense is complete and open to the public, with the exception of a stretch next to the railway bridge. This will be completed shortly.

W7: Shoreham Airport

Construction on the flood embankment is underway and is expected to be finished at the end of 2018. For the duration of works, the footpath running riverside of Cecil Pashley Way, between the railway bridge and the Old Shoreham Road, will be closed to the public.

E1: Tollhouse Bridge

The flood defense between Star Gap and Oyster Quay is complete.

E2: Ropetackle

The Environment Agency has started work on a new concrete flood defense wall that ties into the existing Ropetackle development and the Network Rail bridge abutment.

E3: Old Railway Reach

Works to the north of the Amsterdam pub are complete and the northern section of the Downs Link is open to the public. Work to complete the section of the defense closest to the railway is underway and is expected to be complete in the autumn.
