Narrabeen Lagoon Sand Removal Works Kick Off

The Northern Beaches Council has begun a major excavation which will see over 6,000 truckloads of sand removed from the entrance to Narrabeen Lagoon to minimize the risk of flooding.

While an excavation of this size usually only happens every 4 or 5 years, this project has been fast tracked due to the accelerated build-up of sand over the last 2 years.

The sand deposition is part of a natural cycle where sand moves from Collaroy-Narrabeen beach into the entrance to Narrabeen Lagoon.

The project will move around 45,000 cubic meters of sand (about 90,000 tonnes) and relocate it back Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach, replenishing the beach.

According to the council’s latest update, the works are expected to take around three months with the lagoon open in time for the summer holidays.
