USACE, Toms River: Dredging Operations Resume in Ortley

Toms River Township, New Jersey, said in their latest announcement that following a long stretch of bad weather, dredging operations have resumed in Ortley and have begun in the North Beaches.

The latest estimates from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are that Ortley will be complete around this December and the North Beaches will be complete around early February.

These dates are always subject to weather and mechanical breakdowns, said USACE.

This project, conducted by Weeks Marine of Cranford, NJ, was authorized by Section 1001 (32) of the Water Resources Development Act of 2007. The study investigated flood and coastal storm damage effects with a view toward reducing impacts from coastal erosion and storms.

The recommended plan called for construction of a beach fill with a berm and dune along the study area oceanfront utilizing sand from an offshore borrow source and periodic nourishment for a period of 50 years.
