Wabasha Operations About to Begin

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is set to begin moving dredged material from its temporary placement site on the north side of Wabasha, Minnesota, to the Wabasha Sand and Gravel pit this month.

The Corps’ contractor, LS Marine, Inc., from St. Paul, Minnesota, plans to begin initial preparations this week.

Truck hauling operations are expected to begin Nov. 26. The contractor intends to begin operating only during daylight hours, Monday through Friday. They will begin 24-hour operations, five days per week in early December, reported USACE.

The Corps officials anticipate 24-hour operations to continue through mid-to-late February. Trucking operations will be limited during the holidays.

The contractor is moving nearly 300,000 cubic yards of dredged material from the Corps’ Wabasha Gravel Pit via truck to the Wabasha Sand and Gravel pit on the west side of U.S. Highway 61. Both pits are located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and Bruegger Valley Rd.

USACE awarded a $1,6 million contract Aug. 29, to move the dredged material. The purpose of this movement is to ensure there is adequate storage capacity for future placements.
