The project will remove approximately 600,000 cubic yards of sand from the AIWW, restoring the channel to the authorized depth of 12 feet.

According to the Corps, material dredged from the AIWW channel is beach quality sand and compatible with the beach at Amelia Island State Park.

The beach quality material pumped from the AIWW is being placed on the beach near the southern park boundary.

USACE also added that a very small quantity of dredge material not compatible with the beach will be placed in a dredge material management area in the vicinity of the AIWW.

Dredging operations, performed by Southwind Construction Corporation, will run 24 hours/7 days a week, weather permitting. The project’s completion date is scheduled for mid-April.

The dredging project is funded in partnership with the Florida Inland Navigation District.
