The channel was formed by channelization of the Calcasieu River from Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico—36 miles—and an additional 32 miles out into the Gulf.

According to the FedBizOpps, the project includes removal of material within the Calcasieu River Ship Channel from Mile 17.0 to 34.0.

Removal of material from within Devil’s Elbow is included as optional work as well as additional dredging on the upper reach of the channel.

The dredged material will be disposed within the designated Confined Disposal Facilities adjacent to the Calcasieu River and Pass.

The work also includes retention dike construction, surveys, and optional ditching and draining of disposal areas, spill box removal, etc.
