Contract Awarded for Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District has awarded a contract in the amount of $12.2 million to Pontchartrain Partners, LLC., to repair damages caused by Hurricane Harvey on the Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project.

“The project will correct erosion damages to the levee and Moses Lake Floodgate inlet area caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017,” said Ryan Schwartzengraber, an emergency management specialist with USACE Galveston District’s Emergency Management Office.

The Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project protects 36 square miles of the greater Texas City-La Marque-Hitchcock area and comprises of 22 miles of protective works surrounding the Texas City community and petrochemical production plants located there. The repairs will preserve Texas City’s vital levee system and provide greater flood risk management for the 2020 hurricane season,” added Ryan Schwartzengraber.

Work is scheduled to begin in December 2019 and is expected to be completed by April 2020. The project is expected to cause a closure of the Moses Lake Floodgate for 60 days starting in January 2020.

The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.

3rd International Congress Hydraulic Engineering Structures and Dredging
