The Port of Mackay and North Queensland Bulk Ports announced today that works will commence on a new $8.5 million tug berth facility.
According to Julieanne Gilbert , Member for Mackay, the tug berth project was the latest, and the largest, in a series of significant investments totalling $17 million aimed at boosting the port for current and future trade.
“The new facility will include berths for up to two tugs including a gangway and floating pontoon, which can also accommodate bigger and more powerful tugs,” said Mrs Gilbert.
NQBP Chief Executive Officer Nicolas Fertin commented, “The tug project berth complements a $1.8 million upgrade to Wharf Four, expanding its cargo capacity, and a $2.4 million project to extend Wharf 1, facilitating longer cargo.”
The first Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) cargo shipment was successfully unloaded at Wharf Four in January.
The investment in Wharf 1 will improve infrastructure capability to handle extra-long (85m to 95m) cargoes to attract new trade opportunities and diversify. The construction works involve extension of Wharf 1 access bridge to enable trade of longer breakbulk material, for example rail projects.
