The Hythe Ranges Sea Defence project has been the first Environment Agency coastal project that has been delivered using a design and build model.

Van Oord, alongside JT Mackley, with Jacobs as the design partner, were appointed to deliver the project.

“During the tender and design phases, the truly integrated design and construction team worked efficiently and effectively together to optimise the design,” Mackley said.

As well as delivering a fast track design programme and £2.5m efficiency savings, sustainability gains were also identified and delivered.

Workshops of the design and construction professionals enabled practical and lean solutions to be developed from the outset to deliver the shared project vision, said Mackley.
