Recent maintenance dredging at Kalbarri – conducted by CGC Dredging’s CSD Mudlark I – has restored depths for safe navigation of the entrance channel at the mouth of the Murchison River.
This important dredging was brought forward due to infilling from winter storms and Cyclone Seroja. A record 95,000 cubic metres of material was extracted, increasing the navigable width of the entrance channel from three metres to 140 metres.
According to the Marine Safety WA, some of the dredged material was added to Chinaman’s Beach and on the foreshore area extending northeast of the marine rescue boat ramp.
The remaining material was pumped approximately one kilometre north of the river mouth.
The campaign, originally planned for later this year, was made possible thanks to flexibility of the contractor, CGC Dredging and the understanding of the City of Rockingham which agreed to postpone the planned works, making the required machinery available to travel to the Mid-West.
