The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana (CPRA) has applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for permits and permission to construct, maintain and operate the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion (MBSD) project on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish.
In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, USACE has prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to analyze the potential impacts of the proposed project and a range of reasonable alternatives on the natural and human environment.
Information in the EIS will help decision makers, public officials, and citizens understand the impacts of the proposed MBSD Project and its alternatives before any permitting decisions are made.
The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion is Louisiana’s most important coastal restoration project to date.
It will reconnect the river to the influence area and divert sediment, nutrients and fresh water to build new land, maintain existing marshes and increase habitat resiliency to sea level rise and storm events.
The deadline for sending comments on the MBSD project is October 24, 2022.
