Under a contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Weeks Marine Inc. has begun dredging and beachfill operations in Rehoboth Beach .
According to the City, dredging and sand replacement which began last weekend is expected to continue for 2-3 weeks.
The dredge, seen in the background of the photo, brings about 2,000 cubic yards of sand to the beach each trip, and it takes 60-90 minutes to unload.
The project is part of a $23.8 million federal contract for beach replenishment in Delaware and includes work at Rehoboth Beach Dewey, Bethany, South Bethany, and Fenwick Island.
In Rehoboth Beach, the new sand will be placed on the beach in the northern portion of the community between City Tennis Courts area on N. Surf Avenue south to the Bandstand Area.
Officials hope that work in Rehoboth will be completed in advance of the Memorial Day weekend unofficial summer season kickoff.
