The Queensland Government has committed $50 million in funding towards the future of the Bowen Wharf as part of the State Budget.
North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) hosted a visit by the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, at the Bowen Wharf yesterday, with key community stakeholders joining NQBP also to hear the exciting news.
“NQBP has thanked the Queensland Government for its significant funding contribution towards the future of the Bowen Wharf,” commented NQBP Acting CEO, Belinda Kenny . “The $50 million injection in the State Budget will breathe new life into the Bowen Wharf.”
The commercial role of the 150-year-old Bowen Wharf has changed significantly over recent years, from its heyday as an export wharf for cattle and coal last century, the wharf today supports towage operations for the Abbot Point export terminal.
“What has not changed is its importance to the local community as a reminder of the region’s rich history and a modern-day magnet for everyone from walkers to fishers and photographers,” said Kenny.
She also added that with this significant funding, visitors and locals alike will benefit from a revitalised public facility for generations to come.
NQBP will soon commence engagement with stakeholders and the local community to shape the future of the wharf revitalisation project.
