Tanya Thompson, Member for Myall Lakes, held a crucial meeting recently with Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen, at NSW Parliament House to address the pressing concern of sand shoaling in the Wallis Lake estuary.
During the meeting, it was confirmed that NSW Maritime, is working with the Mid Coast Council and has agreed to provide funds to extend the scope of the planned dredging on Point Road, to include further dredging between Point Road and Miles Island. This aims to improve vessel access to the river system, ensuring safe navigation for tourism and aquaculture operations, said Thompson.
The meeting also shed light on a targeted timeline for action.
The dredging project is set to be completed in time for the Christmas school holiday period of 2023. This resolution will provide much-needed relief to the local oyster industry and other businesses dependent on the influx of tourists during this period.
“Minister Jo Haylen demonstrated her full support and cooperation. She expressed commitment to resolving the sand shoaling crisis, highlighting her dedication to assisting the Myall Lakes community in overcoming this challenge,” according to Tanya Thompson .
