Next Gen to start dredging of the Back Sound
Next Generation Logistics is about to begin work on the $6.9 million project in Cape Lookout – dredging of the Back Sound to Lookout Bight Federal Navigation Channel.
According to the Army Corps, the contractor will mobilize two cutter suction dredges for this project. Next Gen is planning to start dredging operations this week.
The project is a joint effort between the Corps, the National Park Service, the State of North Carolina, and Carteret County, NC, that will safeguard the environment and maintaining vital access to the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Dredged material suitable for beach placement will be deposited on the interior beach near National Park Service structures.
The remaining material will be strategically placed to create a habitat conducive to nesting shorebirds, aligning with the mission of preserving the natural ecosystem.
