Oceanside’s beaches have been shrinking, and the federal government is stepping up with a plan to fix it. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released its draft plan to restore sand to Oceanside’s beaches, from the Harbor south to the Buena Vista Lagoon.
The erosion traces back to the federal construction of Camp Pendleton Harbor in 1942, which blocked the natural flow of sand down the coast. Federal law requires the repair.
USACE’ tentatively selected plan is beach nourishment: dredging sand from an offshore site and placing it back on Oceanside’s beaches, repeated every 10 years.
Congress will still need to authorize and fund the construction phase, City of Oceanside – Government said.
