The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has begun repairs to the Outer West and East Arrowhead breakwaters at Oswego Harbor in Oswego, New York, which have sustained significant damage from storms, wave action and deterioration.
According to USACE, crews will repair approximately 1,600 feet of breakwater in multiple phases through 2028.
Phase one repairs 600 feet of the Outer West Breakwater and is scheduled for completion by November, and some additional work on the East Arrowhead and Outer West breakwaters is planned to begin this month.
These improvements support safe access for Great Lakes vessels and help sustain Oswego Harbor, which supports nearly $28 million in annual economic impact, USACE said.
Oswego Harbor is a deep draft commercial harbor which handled 372,000 tons of cargo, including cement & concrete (51%), aluminum (28%), and distillate fuel oil (6%) in 2023. Waterborne transportation facilitated by the harbor supports $21.1 million in business revenue, 76 direct, indirect, and induced jobs, and $7 million in labor income to the transportation sector.
