The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has received a Federal Consistency Determination under Section 307 of the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) from the USACE Detroit District regarding proposed maintenance dredging of the federal navigation channel at Cedar River Harbor in Cedarville Township, Menominee County, and in-water placement of the dredged material.
Under the plan, approximately 40,000 cubic yards of sediment will be dredged from the channel.
An estimated 10,000 cubic yards of this material is not suitable for use in beach nourishment and will be placed in two 160-acre open water placement sites between Ingallston, Michigan, and Chambers Island, Wisconsin, at a depth of more than 30 meters.
The other 30,000 cubic yards of sediment is mostly sand and may be either used for beach nourishment on the Lake Michigan shoreline, beginning at the eastern breakwater of the harbor and extending up to three-quarters of a mile east, or placed in the open water placement sites.
EGLE is now reviewing the proposed activity for consistency with Michigan’s Coastal Management Program pursuant to Section 307 of the CZMA.
