Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced that the contract has been awarded and work will begin this fall on a $36 million beach replenishment project in Keansburg.
This Army Corps of Engineers project, which is funded at full federal expense, will restore beaches in Keansburg to conditions better than prior to Sandy and was made possible by the Sandy aid package passed by Congress.
The contractor, Great Lakes Dredge Dock, LLC, of Oak Brook, Illinois, will pump 1.1 million cubic yards of new sand and is required to complete the work within 200 days of starting.
“ Many residents and businesses in Keansburg have been continuously impacted by serious flooding, and during Sandy the community suffered damage unlike it had ever before. ” said Pallone. “ I’m pleased that the Army Corps is moving forward with this historic investment that will help to protect area homes and businesses from future flooding, as well as repair the destruction caused by Sandy. I have fought for this and other beach replenishment projects for years, because I know how important they are to protect some of our most fragile coastal infrastructure.”
The new contract award announced today is part of the larger Keansburg Storm Damage Reduction Project, which includes a previously announced contract to repair Keansburg’s levees, remove debris, and fix a damaged wing wall.
Work on the levee repair will also begin this fall.
