In December 2014 the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen) published a policy document, entitled “The Danish Solution: A BluePrint for Clean Soil”.

The document provides a policy framework for identifying and prioritizing soil-contamination sites in Denmark and developing green-technology solutions to remediate these sites.

Highlighting innovative and successful remediation technologies that have been developed with funding by the Capital Region of Denmark, the document includes two novel technologies developed by Geosyntec and its partners: Electrokinetically-Enhanced Bioremediation (EK-BIO™) and High Pressure Direct Push Technology (DPT) Jet Injection.

Both technologies are designed to tackle the foremost challenge to site remediation in Denmark – delivering in situ treatment agents into low-permeability glacial clay till, which occurs in the near surface throughout Denmark.

Through a collaborative effort between Geosyntec, the U.S. Army, and the Danish consultancy NIRAS A/S, EK-BIO™ involves application of low-voltage electrical currents to deliver specialized bacteria and substrates for enhanced bioremediation of chlorinated solvents in low-permeability geologic deposits.

This EK-BIO™ project in Denmark represents the first full-scale application of the technology in the world, and has proven the capability of EK-BIO™ to remediate chlorinated solvent source areas and as a cost-effective solution compared to traditional methods.

DPT Jet Injection is a technology, invented by the team of FRx Inc. and Geosyntec, which involves high pressure (10,000 psi) injection of solid phase treatment agents (e.g., zero valent iron powder) into low-permeability matrices by creation of cavities and hydraulic fractures initiated by jetting.

Geosyntec led the first full-scale implementation of DPT Jet Injection in the world at a site in Nivå, Denmark.
