Bournemouth Beach Management Scheme Underway

Work begins along Bournemouth’s coastline this winter to install a further eight new groynes as part of the ongoing beach management scheme.

The groynes are being replaced along the stretch of beach from east of Fisherman’s Walk towards Southbourne with work aimed to be complete by late Spring 2017.

“The seafront promenade will remain open to the public during the works,” the Bournemouth Borough Council said in its announcement.

“However, residents and visitors using this section of the promenade are being asked to take extra care whilst works take place. Information boards will be on display and the public are advised to take particular note of safety signage and site cordons as areas of the beach are sectioned off whilst the works take place.”

This phase of work is part of a 17 year-long program to protect against coastal erosion and maintain Bournemouth’s award winning beaches.

The program includes the replacement of all 53 groynes, an additional three installed as well as three beach replenishments.

Work started on the scheme last year with a beach replenishment replacing 320,000 cubic meters of sand between Bournemouth Pier and Southbourne and the replacement of ten groynes.
