St. Johns County Beach Renourishment Program on the Way

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, said in its latest announcement that the next scheduled renourishment of the St. Johns County Shore Protection project was recently advertised and the contract is scheduled for award in late September.

Construction could start as early as December 2017 (weather pending) and the project will take 4-6 months to complete, USACE said.

The project footprint includes the southern limits of Anastasia State Park to 3.9 miles south of St. Augustine Inlet (11th Street in St. Augustine Beach).

Shoreline erosion severely threatens State Road A1A, the only north-south hurricane evacuation route for communities along the coastline. SR A1A is an integral part of the county’s infrastructure and is essential for public safety prior to, during and after major storm event, said USACE.

The ocean shoreline of St. Johns County is approximately 42 miles long. USACE examined opportunities to reduce the risk of coastal damage and improve conditions on approximately 9.8 miles of beach.
