Clacton Coastal Protection Scheme on Display

Tendring District Council (TDC) has been working closely with consultants Mott MacDonald to come up with the various options – and is currently finishing the design – for a major £5 million scheme that will stabilize cliffs along the Clacton and Holland-on-Sea coastline.

The construction phase of the project is due to start next year with the completion set for March 2019.

As part of the design and planning phase a special public consultation event was staged at the Kingscliff Hotel in Holland-on-Sea. Representatives of TDC and Mott MacDonald used the opportunity to present various options and give a run-down on what the project will entail.

Mick Skeels, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said that it is important to manage the coastal slopes and reduce the amount of movement taking place while also providing adequate protection.

Residents and beach hut owners came along to find out more about our proposals and made some very relevant points and asked some searching questions,” he said.

According to TDC, the latest project has become necessary as the measures put in place in the 1950s and 1960s are now coming to the end of their natural life. The money for the forthcoming work has been found from the coastal protection scheme completed in October 2015 which came in ahead of time and under budget.
