The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract in the amount of $3,390,250 to Mike Hooks Inc., for dredging of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway from Rollover Pass to the Galveston Causeway in Galveston County, Texas.
The contractor is required to remove approximately 900,000 cubic yards of material using a pipeline dredge.
“This dredge work allows us to fulfill our mission of keeping waterways open, making way for vessels to travel through the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, ” said Alicia Rea , an operations manager with USACE Galveston.
According to Rea, dredged material will be placed along rollover beach and in upland confined placement areas.
“We’ve worked diligently with our partners along the GIWW and with resource agencies during the creation of this project, in order to ensure the protection of the ecosystem, ” said Rea.
Dredge work is scheduled to begin in February and is scheduled to be completed within three months.
USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
