The Army Corps of Engineers commenced an urgent dredging project off the coast of Bald Head Island in the near-by channel, according to WWAY3.

River pilots discovered a speed bump in the area of Reach Two, which caused the channel to be shallow, thus being dangerous for commercial shipping traffic.

This problem was expected, according to Shoreline Protection Manager, Chris McCall : “ We foresaw this happening but unfortunately the corps is restrained by the amount of funding they get from congress to adequately maintain and dredge this channel to the authorized depth and width”.

A project which will include dredging and sand replacement, in order to restore the island’s shoreline, is planned for the up-coming winter.
