Cochin Port Trust (CPT) plans to build an outer harbor and to bring in a dredger in order to save money on dredging costs.

Dredging cost in the Cochin port is the second highest after Calcutta port.

A conducted study shows that up to 95% of the silt in the port came in from the sea.

CPT chairman Paul Antony stated that the Mumbai based I-Maritime Consultancy will prepare the project report for the outer harbor. They will also install breakwaters.

According to The Times of India, this project is expected to reduce the silt in the port and the costs of dredging as well.

Anthony requested special Central assistance with the project and was given thumbs up for buying the dredger. He stated: “ We are optimistic that the Centre would consider both the requests favourably.”
