Experts Provide Update on Hudson River Dredging

Environmental experts gave an update on the clean up process at the nation’s largest hazardous waste site, the Hudson River.

Since 2009, General Electric has been removing 1.3 million tons of PCBs that were dumped into 200 miles of the Hudson River.

At a public forum, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Conservation announced the dredging process is more than half way complete. But even though the multi-billion dollar clean up is ahead of schedule, there is still a lot more that needs to be done.

“But there are also areas that are outside of the footprint to the clean up that recent data shows need to be added in. And we’re working on that, as well. And this is a good opportunity to talk about what’s going well and what needs to be better,” said Paul Gallay of Hudson Riverkeeper.

The Riverkeeper says most areas of the Hudson are now safe to swim in, but people should not eat fish from the river.
