The importance of a strong legal framework in building a sustainable business was underlined during a visit by Dubai Courts to DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali port recently.

Top officials from Dubai Courts led by Dr. Ahmed Saeed Bin Hazim, Director General of Dubai Courts, were welcomed by HE Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah; Vice Chairman, DP World; and Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World; UAE Region.

The meeting was also attended by Judge Jassem Baqer; Head of the Court of First Instance and Head of Committee, Judge Abdul Qadir Mousa, Head of the Commercial Court of First Instance, and DP World, UAE Region senior officials.

HE Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Vice Chairman, DP World , said:

“Dubai Courts oversee the legal requirements for ship berthing and container handling and play a key role in the efficiency of our operations through the settlement and adjudication of maritime law. We thank Dr. Bin Hazim and colleagues for supporting Jebel Ali and Dubai’s other ports through the efficient working of the Courts. The UAE and Dubai have become an international hub for the maritime industry, and a robust and efficient legal and court system has been, and remains, crucial to this important position.”

Dr. Ahmed Saeed Bin Hazim, Director General of Dubai Courts, underlined the contribution of Dubai Courts to UAE’s leading role in regional trade, saying:

“We are pleased to support the growth of Dubai and the UAE through the efficient working of the courts. We have made progress in this regard in recent years. The UAE improved its ranking in the World Bank Doing Business Report 2013 to 26 among 183 countries. Two of the ten criteria highlighted in the report were contract enforcement and the resolution of insolvency cases. We are proud to say that the Report found that Dubai has made significant progress in both criteria.”

After exchanging commemorative plaques, the Dubai Courts delegation toured the port, where they were briefed on the on-going expansions, which will add 5 million TEU (20 foot equivalent container unit) to the capacity of Jebel Ali container terminals by 2014, taking capacity to 19 million TEU. The delegation was also briefed on the automated systems and advanced level of services provided by Jebel Ali Port to Dubai’s traders and shipping lines.
