Mark Hanna, Ph.D., P.E., a senior water resources engineer and an Associate of the firm based in California, will be an expert participant this week during the Room for the River: Los Angeles Workshop and Symposium, set for May 16-17 in Los Angeles.
Dr. Hanna will participate in a special track focusing on adaptive strategies for water and soil quality in the Los Angeles River watershed. Paula Daniels, a senior policy adviser to the mayor of Los Angeles, will lead the workshop. The session begins at 1:25 p.m. today at the headquarters of TreePeople, 12601 Mulholland Drive.
The full, two-day symposium – organized by officials with the City of Los Angeles and the Consulate General of the Netherlands – features more than 50 invited experts in environmental sciences and urban policy. Participants will hear about water resources solutions being implemented in the Netherlands, and spend the afternoon focused on their areas of expertise to consider what physical, political, and policy adaptations may be necessary to support a resilient Los Angeles watershed.
After two near-floods along Dutch rivers in 1993 and 1995, and given climate change and the likelihood of more extreme weather, Dutch officials designed and are currently implementing a new approach to managing rivers and floodplains, a program known as Room for the River. Dutch experts will share their experiences from the program and demonstrate how innovative models merging science, technology, and collaborative processes may help solve similar floodplain, water resources, development, infrastructure, and planning challenges along the Los Angeles River.
