The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia Distric is currently conducting dredging operations on the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway and using the sediment to restore marsh near Stone Harbor, New Jersey.
“ Our goal is to beneficially use dredged material when possible to restore habitat and enhance coastal resiliency. Our project partners include the State of NJ Department of Environmental Protection and the The Wetlands Institute ,” USACE said in its latest project update.
According to USACE, the post-Hurricane Sandy funding enabled the dredging of critical shoals from the Intracoastal Waterway, but placement locations were severely limited.
A lack of capacity within confined disposal sites, as well as the need to restore marsh, necessitated a change in practice.
Going forward, the USACE Philadelphia District plans to use this approach as a model for reusing clean and suitable dredged material in beneficial and cost-effective ways.
