Maryland Lieutenant Governor Boyd K. Rutherford last weekend visited a shoreline resiliency and restoration project at Assateague State Park.

The innovative project seeks to enhance habitat, improve public access and reduce erosion through the use of nature-based structures, including boulders, cobble and clean sand, and native wetland vegetation.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently completed construction of the project, which consists of a series of 10 headland structures aimed at dissipating wave energy created during large storm events, and other climate and weather-based impacts.

According to the Maryland DNR, this innovative approach will arrest erosion and provide habitat, while also providing the park with public access and education opportunities.

The project was funded by the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund.
