Dredging of Kings Bay Entrance Channel Kicks Off (USA)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has announced start of the Kings Bay Entrance Channel dredging project. A contract was awarded this week to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company for approximately $6.2 million.

During this phase of work, approximately 50,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand will be placed at Fort Clinch State Park. The remaining 500,000 cubic yards of non-beach compatible sand will be transported offshore to an approved Offshore Dredge Material Disposal Site. The work is scheduled to last for 30 days.

This dredging project allows maintenance of the entrance channel, and returns the project to its authorized dimensions. This work is critical to commercial cargo transiting the port, but also to the King’s Bay Naval Base, which shares the entrance channel with the port.
