Klaipeda Reveals Plans for New Dredger

The Klaipeda Seaport Authority will, in the near future, have its own dredger.

Last Friday, April 15th, the authority announced its plans to buy a new dredger.

In order to maintain depth in and around the port area, the authority will next month release a tender for the procurement of a self-propelled dredger.

Klaipeda State Seaport Authority Director General Arvydas Vaitkus said that around 300,000 to 400,000 cubic meters of soil needs to be dredged from the harbor area. According to him, this is one of the reasons why it is necessary for the port to acquire its own dredger.

He continued saying that dredger’s technical specifications will allow a significant amount of cleaning work to be done at the berths. The self-propelled dredger will be allocated for dredging works in the port waters and at the quays, beach nourishment projects, soil supply to the port jetty construction zones, etc.

The plan calls for the dredger that will be powered in two ways – diesel and gas.
