USA: New Topsail Inlet Dredging Set for March

The New Topsail Inlet dredging project is scheduled to begin in March 2012.

Tim Holloman, Topsail Beach Town Manager said: “We still anticipate opening the bids on February 15 and starting the project somewhere around March 1st.”

Dredging will take about three weeks and should last through the tourist season,” added Holloman.

The plan calls for the inlet to be dredged to the same 10-foot depth as in the past years. But this time the sand will be placed on the beaches instead of being cast to the side of the channel.

According to the engineers this should reduce the need to dredge the inlet three times each year.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers surveyed the waterway in summer and determined the water depth in the New Topsail Inlet is four feet at low tide.

The New Topsail Inlet will be dredged again in March 2013.

I’m just sorry it’s been such a long process,” Holloman concluded.
