Thailand: Completion of Bangkok Canal Dredging Set for May

Army Region 1 Commander Lieutenant General Udomdej Sitabutr said the canal dredging in 7 districts of Bangkok will be completed by the end of May.

Lt-Gen Udomdej said after his inspection of the work that he was proud with the military efforts in helping dredge the canals across many areas of the capital city and that the participating soldiers have made significant progress in the project which has been designed to complement the government’s flood prevention policy.

Residents of Bangkok, he claimed, have also given the military a helping hand during their operation. Vetiver grass has been grown along canal banks to prevent the soil from eroding.

Lt-Gen Udomdej said he had instructed soldiers to lend their hands to local residents whenever they need. He anticipated that the canal dredging operation in 7 districts of Bangkok which has been assigned to the responsibility of the Army Region 1, to be completed by no later than May.

However, he said, the only obstacle that gets in the way is the intrusion of houses built partially on canals. In such a case, the military and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have joined hands in making understanding with locals to find out joint solutions.
