Draft Environmental Report for Orestimba Creek Released

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District yesterday released the draft Orestimba Creek flood risk management feasibility study and environmental assessment/initial statement for review and public comment.

The comment period will remain open until Feb. 7, in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

The report tentatively identifies a plan to build more than four miles of levee to a height of up to seven feet at an estimated cost of $44 million to reduce flood risk to the city of Newman and surrounding agricultural areas.

Developing the report and plan was a cost-shared cooperation of the Corps, the state’s Central Valley Flood Protection Board and Stanislaus County.
