USA: Fire Island Dredging Gets Boost

Fire Island Dredging Gets Boost

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to speed up Fire Island dredging, reports nbc.

This $33.2 million project is supposed to protect sections of Sandy-damaged Ocean Parkway.

Financing of the project is included in the Sandy Supplement Aid Package, which is waiting for approval.

Charles Schumer, United States Senator for New York, said that the Army Corps is ready to allocate $350,000 for the Fire Island dredging project which would have a positive impact on the economic development of this region.

Schumer said the ACOE last dredged the inlet in 2008 and the next dredging project is not scheduled until 2014, which is way too long to wait, reports patch.com.
