Marquette applies for dredging permit
The City of Marquette (MI) has applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, for a permit to perform dredging and dredged material placement in Lake Superior.
According to the Corps, the applicant proposes to mechanically dredge approximately 24,953 cubic yards of material from a 750 x 228 foot area to create a new channel for the Dead River.
The applicant also wants to dredge approximately 29,244 cubic yards of material from a 654 x 475 foot area adjacent to the existing coal dock.
The purpose of the proposed work is to maintain navigation access to the coal dock while rerouting recreational traffic away from the dock and to provide beach nourishment along Lakeshore Boulevard.
The deadline for sending comments on the proposed work is May 23, 2023.
