Sand Key Renourishment Plan Moves Forward (USA)

The State issued the Sand Key renourishment project permit July 6, 2011 to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The project is slated to begin within 30 days of March 1, 2012 and be completed by the end of October 2012.

This 8.7-mile beach fill project will extend from just south of Sand Key Park to North Redington Beach but will not include the shoreline of Belleair Shore.

Belleair Beach Community Center will be hosting an open forum with Pinellas County Coastal Manager Andy Squires and staff from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.

More than a million cubic yards of sand will be moved from a location twelve miles west of Sand key to an area one to two miles offshore. From there, it will be pumped on to the beach.

During the project, active beach construction areas will be closed to the public.
